Important update: Changes to Teach Your Monster to Read
(5 minute read)
We’re writing to let you know about some important upcoming changes to the Teach Your Monster to Read app, including introducing new features and content and a new subscription-based way to play.
Already bought the Teach Your Monster to Read app? You can get free access if you update to the new version when it arrives.
What’s changing?
Later this year, we’ll be launching a brand-new version of Teach Your Monster to Read. This updated version of the game will include improved features, new content, and ongoing updates to better support children’s learning.
As part of this change, the Teach Your Monster to Read app will be moving from a one-time purchase model to a paid subscription-based model. For the first time, there will be free access for schools and special offers for home users.
What this means for you?
- The current version of Teach Your Monster to Read will be replaced by the new, improved version when it launches (scheduled for global launch later in 2026).
- Although the new version of the app will become a subscription service, we will be offering free of charge access to the new version of Teach Your Monster to Read to all users who have paid for the existing app version.
- If you previously purchased the Teach Your Monster to Read app through an app store, you will still be able to continue using the version currently installed on your device if you choose not to update it. However, any new downloads or updates made after the launch of the new version will move to the new subscription-based app experience.
- The new version of the Teach Your Monster to Read app will require a paid subscription to access via app stores. For the avoidance of doubt, existing app users (people who have bought Teach Your Monster to Read app before the launch of the new version), can have free of charge access to the new version.
Free access and special offers
As a social impact organisation, our mission is to help as many children as possible learn to read. We are therefore offering the following reassurances to our existing users:
- Both the old and new versions of the game will continue to be free to play on the web.
- For the first time, the Teach Your Monster to Read app will also be free for use in classrooms worldwide.
- All existing users will be given free of charge access to the new version of Teach Your Monster to Read.
- We’ll be offering special discounts, offers and great value deals on subscriptions when we launch the new version.
You will be able to find out how to access a free trial and the subscription offers available to you directly within the app when you first access it after the changes go live.
It will be entirely up to you whether you wish to subscribe to the new version of the app after the go-live date. The current version will still work as long as the app is not updated on any user’s device. This will allow existing users to keep the functionality they originally had, and paid for, without diminishing the quality, fitness for purpose or original description of the app. No game can go over a decade without a much-needed upgrade, and we’re making the updated version in line with the latest curriculum, technologies and academic evidence, while keeping the fun, charm, and monster magic that tens of millions know and love.
Why we’re making this change
We’ve made the decision to create a new version of the game to ensure we can continue improving and expanding it over time. We’ve spent years listening to children, parents, teachers, and literacy experts. The new game brings together that feedback with modern technology and the latest learning research, while keeping the monster-filled fun that made the original so special. Read more about our reasons for making a new game.
We aim to make the game as accessible to everyone as possible — through free web access, promotions, and free classroom use — though there are ongoing costs involved in maintaining, developing, and supporting Teach Your Monster to Read. To keep Teach Your Monster going and continue helping children learn both now and in the future, we need a sustainable way to fund it. Along with the updated game, the new subscription model for new users helps us do that, so we can keep delivering high-quality educational content for the long term and help as many children as possible to reach their potential.
Timing
We are providing this notice well in advance. We expect to begin launching an early version of the update to the Teach Your Monster to Read app to a small number of users in approximately 60 days, with a broader rollout likely taking place later in 2026.
The launch date of the new version of the app for each user will be dependent on the app store you originally downloaded the app from.
We understand that changes like this can be significant, and we want to be as transparent as possible – this is why we are giving you advance notice of these changes.
If you have any questions about any of these changes, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you for being part of our community and for supporting children’s reading journeys.
Thanks,
The Teach Your Monster Team
