Encourage Healthier Eating using Senses and Songs!
(2 minute read)
Lots of schools love to have a week to encourage Healthy Eating around this time of year, and we think this is a great idea. Our Adventurous Eating monster Bub is especially a fan of Healthy Eating Week… in fact, he thinks it should be every week of the year! To help encourage your little ones to be a bit more adventurous, we’ve created this handy ‘Eat the Rainbow’ trying chart.

This is a great tool to encourage children to try a new fruit or veg once a week (maybe more). As in our game, Adventurous Eating, we’d encourage kids to ‘try’ foods by engaging with them using their senses:
• Smell – What does the food smell like?
• Look – What does it look like? What can you see?
• Touch – What does the food feel like?
• Listen – When you touch it, does it make a sound?
• Taste – Would you taste the food? Maybe give it a little lick?
Dr. Lucy Cooke, Child-Eating Behaviour and our Adventurous Eating expert, found that repeated exposure to a disliked food, paired with small rewards, can increase a child’s willingness to try and enjoy it. So once your little one has successfully engaged with a food from the chart, why not add a sticker or colour it in and stick it on the fridge to celebrate!
You can find more information about Dr. Cooke’s Research on our website.
Also, did you know there are lots of fun fruit and vegetable songs in Adventurous Eating? Created and rapped by multi-talented composer and musician Simon Panrucker, over 40 fruit and vegetables have custom songs as part of Bub’s Dance Party. In our experience, kids react well to a catchy tune they can listen to and sing along to. It’s not just a good tune, though — it can really help with the learning, solidifying the key themes and messages of a game. So if you’d like to build more positive relationships with a certain food, why not play the song? Here’s Bub’s Dance Party about Peas!
You can access all the fruit and veg songs in the game via Adventurous Eating Practice Mode! Simply select ‘Practice’ from the player screen on the app or for FREE via the desktop browser.
