The reading crisis is still here, so what are we going to do about it?
(1 minute read)
You may have read our recent email about the reading crisis, with the Department for Education reporting that one in four children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard and that too many children are being left behind before they’ve even had a fair start¹.
Since 2010, we’ve helped support the learning of reading through our most popular game, Teach Your Monster to Read. Over the years, we’ve listened to teachers, literacy experts, families and children. We’ve learned what works, what doesn’t and what children actually need to succeed. Times have changed, and we realised something important… we need to keep changing too. What got us here won’t get us to where we need to be.

A next-generation reading game
We’re creating a next-generation version of Teach Your Monster to Read for homes and classrooms around the world. It’s being built using all our years of knowledge, the latest research and educational guidelines to help children learn to read independently.
We’re keeping everything children and grown-ups love, and adding powerful, evidence-backed improvements, designed to make a real difference. The design will be updated for an easier, more engaging and more effective learning experience.
We’ve also been adding support for our US learners with an in-game US accent and alignment with the US common core curriculum, which makes the game accessible to more learners than ever before. Exciting stuff!
Furthermore, because the new version has been built with newer software, we’ll be able to make updates more easily and quickly, driven by your feedback – winner!
